As we all know, high-end hotels are the best at choosing sheets that are luxurious, soft, and durable, so they look good wash after wash.

New York Magazine’s The Strategist recently set out to find the sheets that hotel insiders loved in a column “The Best Sheets, According to Hotel Insiders.”  Featured was the Garnier-Thiebaut’s Nice bedding collection:

One of the most respected names in the hospitality industry, Garnier-Thiebaut supplies linens to some of the finest hotels and restaurants in the world, so it was probably inevitable they would make it on such a list.

Previously we looked at how Garnier-Thiebaut’s Green Sweet tablecloths can keep off stains like red wine.  In time for the Summer, we got one of their coated tablecloths as well and put mayonnaise, ketchup, BBQ sauce, and red wine on it.  Here’s what happened:

You saw it right — the stains literally just wiped right off.  It’s even easier to clean than the Green Sweet tablecloths.

What’s the difference?  Whereas “Green Sweet” is a patented nanoparticle treatment, the coated tablecloths and placemats have 3 layers of environmentally friendly, PVC acrylic coating woven into the cotton fabric itself to make them even more stain and liquid repellant.  While they are a little stiffer than Green Sweet, the coated tablecloths and placemats still feel like real fabric and don’t have that shiny, plastic acrylic top.

We were first drawn to Echelon Home’s new bedding collections because the collections looked so stunning: just perfect for our (imaginary) beach house, (imaginary) penthouse, and (imaginary) yacht.  So imagine our surprise when we found out that they start at just $59 per set!  How is this possible?

Echelon Home is a young company whose founders wanted to create a line of stylish, fashionable linens using high-quality fabrics that they could offer at an affordable price.  So they traveled around the world and tested sample after sample until they hit on just the right formula.  Everything in the collection is made from 300 count Egyptian cotton sateen or 200 count Egyptian cotton percale, and their designs are very chic.

As we get ready for the holidays and the end of the year, we’ve put a few of Anali’s bath and guest towels on sale at 25% off.

Every time I look at the Anali embroidered towels, I’m amazed by how much detail went into them at every step of the way — from the original design to the execution of the embroidery work.  Look carefully at these embroidered Iris bath towels … can you see the different shades inside each flower petal?

Once our theme was set, I spent a lot of time online looking through Style Me Pretty, Martha Stewart Weddings, and The Knot.  I wanted something elegant and feminine which incorporated orchids.  Also, because it was a birthday party and I did not want the room to look like it was set up for a wedding, so I stayed away from all-white themes.  I found this image at finestationery.com, which I used for inspiration:

Since so many people were contributing to Aunt Carmen’s party, we needed to keep our costs low.  The best way to do this was to use as many the hotel’s services as possible, so I started with the room.  The hotel’s Arboleda salon is surrounded by windows and reminded me of a conservatory, so I thought it would be fun to turn each table into a miniature floral garden.

Next, I asked for pictures of their table linens:

And this is all we had.

I knew that even with nothing added, the tables would look fine.  There were to be 11-12 people per table, so they would be much fuller, and the combination of pewter chargers, white china, clear stemware, and all our food meant that at the very least, this would look like an upscale restaurant.  But I wanted to transform the room.

I studied my inspiration images carefully, and I realized several things:

– Our guest list was large, so we needed place cards and menus;

– Candles are great for dinner parties.  They add light and movement, and they would allow us to dim the main lights to create a magical setting;

– People love gifts.  Special guests could be given our floral centerpieces to take home, but we wanted small favors for everyone.

To keep the menus simple (I needed to print 175, plus all the extras due to corrections and last-minute changes), I went to Staples and bought a package of heavy ivory stock and asked them to cut the sheets in half.  Then, I made individual menus with guests’ names at the top; these would serve as both place cards and as souvenirs after the event:

For sparkle, we bought lots of white votives in clear containers from quickcandles.com, …

… and for height and color, we bought 15″ green tapers from gandgwebstore.com:

For an extravagant look, we found freeze-dried rose petals at flyboynaturals.com.  These were really inexpensive (about $5 per table), really lightweight (perfect for carrying on the plane), and they looked great scattered on our tables:

And finally, for favors, we found small purses online at efavormart.com for just $0.25 each; these we filled with Hershey’s Easter kisses (these are like regular kisses, but they are wrapped in pastel foils) from our local supermarket:

Our florist suggested tall arrangements and showed us samples by e-mail.  She also let us borrow mirrored bases for our party, which came in really handy at night.
