With "Chinese Zodiac Signs Rat", Maria Walther created a figurine full of symbolic power made of brilliant white Meissen porcelain. The 12 cm high figurine "Chinese Zodiac Signs Rat" plays a special role in this collection by MEISSEN artist Maria Walther, because according to the legend of the Chinese zodiac, the Jade Emperor invited the entire animal kingdom to a race through a river.
The rat was the first animal to reach the opposite side of the river because it convinced the buffalo, the second animal in the Chinese zodiac, that together they had the best chance of winning. Shortly before the finish line, the rat jumped off the buffalo's back and reached the finish line first. The design of the deeply symbolic figurines in the "Chinese Zodiac Signs" collection is reduced to the essential, but at the same time plays with the limits of possibilities in porcelain design.
