Licensed from the Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library. Among the treasured holdings of the Winterthur Library are its special collections—a vast collection of rare books, manuscripts, and printed ephemera that provide insight into the design, craft, and daily life of the past. Carefully preserved in the collection is The Grammar of Ornament, by Owen Jones, published in London by Day and Son in 1856. Jones’s work is one of the most significant design books ever published, offering a unified philosophy of ornament. The beautifully detailed and colored images served as inspiration to Chelsea House artists. With their close attention to detail, their designs are certain to become an important part of today’s living environments that emphasize unparalleled quality and beauty.
